The journalism industry today relies on freelancers. Frequently, freelance journalists now conduct work for - and rely on the income from - clients based in a different country to themselves. In today's interconnected but fragmented world, what can all parties do to ensure this relationship is as professional, feasible, ethical and affordable as possible? In this session the panellists discussed challenges and sought out solutions.

IJNet Arabic's Toolkit; Collaborative Journalism and Cross Border Reporting

Speakers highlighted the legal principles during the preparation of collaborative reports, presented tools and secure chat applications, explained the necessary clauses in agreements for journalists who wish to conduct collaborative investigation, safety, resources, tips and more.

Implementing AI; Experiences from Small Newsrooms in the Global South

IMS and ARIJ discussed inspiring case studies of newsrooms experimenting with AI, with a focus on implementing and deployment in small resource strapped newsrooms in the Global South. During the panel, ARIJ and IMS unveiled a new innovation opportunity for Arab media outlets, which will enable them to experiment with integration of AI into their workflows and journalistic production.

This session hosted a number of speakers who focused on existing challenges faced by journalists and new ways to face these challenges and face them.

Fighting Disinformation through DALIL

The session covered the role that technology plays in combating the growing threat of disinformation. By exploring the successes, challenges and prospects of DALIL, a one-stop-shop digital platform providing fact-checkers in the region with practical verification tools, insights and resources, the session explored innovative and collaborative approaches that leverage technological advancements to effectively address information disorder.

ARIJ Newsletter - 7 Lessons We have Learnt

In 2023, ARIJ launched its weekly Arabic newsletter, developing another means of communication with our audience. Like any other product, a lot of experimentation takes place; from design and the call-to-action to understanding audience needs. In this session, we discussed the 7 lessons we have learnt during this year.

How to Find Open-Source Documents on the Arab World

A guide to every investigative journalist and fact-checker to uncover publicly available resources. The speaker explored strategies and tools for accessing valuable open-source documents, enabling comprehensive research and analysis.

Is the Western Coverage Alienating the Global South Over Gaza 2023?

The session explored the changing dynamics of media surrounding Gaza, and examined Western media narratives in contrast to perspectives from the Global South. Promoting inquiries into biases, representations, and their enduring effects on trust and cross-border collaboration.

Awards & Closing Ceremony

ARIJ23 marked ARIJ 14th Annual Awards, honouring Arab journalists. The closing ceremony featured speeches from Dr. Zahera Harb, Board Member, ARIJ, Bayan Al Tal, Media Literacy and Communication Consultant - ARIJ Award Jury President, and Gerry Moriarty, The former Northern Editor of The Irish Times.
