Rewriting Climate Headlines Exhibition

During ARIJ 16th Annual Forum, a collaborative effort between the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and ARIJ unveiled three pioneering visual storytelling projects addressing climate change. This partnership melded journalism with design to confront and reshape climate change narratives, yielding groundbreaking stories and visually engaging data representations. The initiative, known as “Rewriting Climate Headlines” earned acclaim for its innovative approach and was featured in a series of videocasts by We Don’t Have Time during COP28.

The animators' drawings are traced or photocopied onto transparent acetate sheets called cels, which are filled in with paints in assigned colors or tones on the side opposite the line drawings. The completed character cels are photographed one-by-one against a painted background by a rostrum camera onto motion picture film . The traditional cel animation process became obsolete by the beginning of the 21st century. Today, animators' drawings and the backgrounds are either scanned into or drawn directly into a computer system.

The three investigative reports, converted into art installations, are:

Story 1: “Construction Projects Fuel Forest Fires In Morocco: The Shadow of Concrete Looms over Morocco's Burning Forests”.

Story 2: “The Season of Migration into the Nets: The Route to Smuggling Rare Migrating Falcons from Libya to the Arabian Gulf”.

Story 3: “Drinking water in the service of the potash industry in southern Jordan Valley: Factories ‘watered’ while farms left thirsty”.
